It ends a career that saw Bale shine for Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid, and LAFC while also solidifying his place among the all-time greats in Welsh football.

Bale said in a statement: “After careful and thoughtful consideration, I announce my immediate retirement from the club and international football. I feel incredibly fortunate to have realized my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life. The highest of highs over 17 seasons, that will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the next chapter has in store for me.”

Bale began his club career with Southampton, where his performance led to a May 2007 transfer to Tottenham. He began his career with Tottenham as a left-back but was soon moved to a position on the left of the offensive line, where he quickly became one of the finest players in the world.

He received several individual honors for his work with the Premier League squad, and in September 2013, Madrid acquired Bale for a then-record cost of €100 million on a six-year contract.

Bale won five Champions Leagues, one Copa del Rey, and three La Liga championships in Spain (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2022). He made several historic contributions for Los Blancos, notably his breathtaking overhead kick in their 3-1 victory over Liverpool in the 2018 Champions League final, despite being locked out in the later years of his Madrid deal.

In the latter stages of his Madrid career, he returned to Spurs on loan for the 2020–21 season. In June 2022, after his contract, he departed Madrid after one last season there and signed a one-year agreement with LAFC.

In his 14 games in the States, his 128th-minute extra-time header in the MLS Cup final, which helped LAFC tie the Philadelphia Union 3-3, was his most significant contribution. Due to it, the game had to go to penalties, where LAFC won their first major championship.

Bale added to his statements: “To my previous clubs Southampton, Tottenham, Real Madrid and finally LAFC, all of my managers and coaches, backroom staff, teammates, all the dedicated fans, my agents, my amazing friends and family, the impact you have had is immeasurable.”

He ends his international career as the male player with the most caps for Wales, having made 111 games and scoring a record-breaking 41 goals. Along with leading their campaigns at Euro 2020 and the most recent World Cup, which was the Welsh men’s team’s first involvement in the World Cup since 1958, he assisted the squad on its path to the quarterfinals of Euro 2016.

What Bale has planned after that has not been disclosed: “I move on with anticipation to the next stage of my life. A time of change and transition, an opportunity for a new adventure.”

He declares that he will closely monitor his Wales squad whatever the shape that new adventure takes.
