Manchester United avoid an early slip as PL resumes

In their first game back after the World Cup break, Manchester United defeated Burnley 2-0 on Wednesday night at Old Trafford to secure their spot in the Carabao Cup quarterfinals.

Coach Erik ten Hag’s team easily defeated Vincent Kompany’s team and advanced to the next round thanks to goals from Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford, who both started despite representing their country in Qatar. Just days after returning from the Middle East, Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro were also part of the squad as United’s domestic season began with a convincing victory.

On Wednesday, United was predicted to defeat Burnley, but the match was trickier than it seemed.

Burnley is in first place in the Championship and only one day after the quarterfinals in Qatar, on December 11, they returned from their World Cup vacation. Kompany may have anticipated that his squad would gain from an increase in match acuity, but despite a few promising moments, it wasn’t enough to close the quality disparity. Since United’s last prize was won in 2017, Ten Hag has made it obvious that he wants to bring home a trophy in his first campaign at Old Trafford by starting Fernandes, Casemiro, and Rashford despite the fact that all three players advanced to the World Cup quarterfinals. Only 11 days ago, Fernandes and Rashford, playing for Portugal and England, respectively, were eliminated.

United has advanced to the Carabao Cup quarterfinals because to Ten Hag’s choice of a solid lineup that included non-World Cup players like Victor Lindelof, Anthony Martial, and Scott McTominay.

In the lead-up to Eriksen’s goal, Fernandes in particular maintained his strong play from Qatar with a clipped ball to Aaron Wan-Bissaka at the back post. Donny van de Beek, who wasn’t on the Netherlands team, would have been a tempting choice for Ten Hag, but Fernandes demonstrated that bringing him back early was the right move.

Jadon Sancho is still on indefinite leave and Cristiano Ronaldo has left, which might leave United short on goals as they pursue a title and a spot in the top four. There have been inquiries about adding another striker in January, but there is no certainty that will happen. If no one does, Rashford and Martial will be left to handle the goal-scoring duties. Rashford has nine goals this season, nearly twice his total from the previous campaign, but Ten Hag needs the 25-year-old to match the 43 goals he scored over two seasons between 2019 and 2021.

Three years ago, Burnley defeated the Red Devils 2-0 at Old Trafford in the Premier League, so Kompany won’t be too disappointed to lose the Carabao Cup. In actuality, the former Manchester City defender’s goal this season is to move Burnley out of the Championship and back into the top flight, despite his pregame declaration that he wanted to “compare ourselves against some of the greatest.”

Since taking over at Turf Moor in the summer, he’s done a fine job, and Burnley is three points ahead at the top after losing only twice all year. A cup run is always great for a side like Burnley and its supporters, who brought 7,000 to Old Trafford, but even if it’s not nearly as exciting, their biggest game this week is against Birmingham City on Tuesday.
