After defeating Forest 2-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday, United will take on Newcastle United at Wembley on February 26. This follows a 3-0 victory in the first leg at the City Ground last week.

After a scoreless first half, Anthony Martial, a substitute, scored the game’s opening goal, and Fred quickly added a second to advance Erik ten Hag’s squad to the championship game and give them a chance to end a trophy drought that dates back to 2017.

Ten Hag is on track to have a fantastic debut season.

The goal was to place in the top four and get to the Champions League when Ten Hag took over as manager in the summer. Halfway through the Dutchman’s debut season, the supporters are headed in that direction and they would have readily taken a trophy on top of that.

With a win over Forest on Wednesday, they are now in the Champions League and can look forward to a Wembley final at the end of February. They are currently fourth in the Premier League, level on points with third-place Newcastle.

Although Newcastle, who are also enjoying a successful season, stand in the way of United winning its first trophy since 2017, doing so would offer boss Ten Hag something concrete to demonstrate the advancements his team has made since he took over. Regardless of how long he stays at Old Trafford, his success there will be measured by whether he can bring home the Premier League and Champions League, but the Carabao Cup is a nice place to start for a team that is lacking in success.

Although Forest didn’t have much of a chance of reversing the 3-0 deficit from the first leg when they traveled to Old Trafford, they at least gave it a go. Tom Heaton denied Brennan Johnson after he had a decent chance, while Sam Surridge denied Emmanuel Dennis right before halftime when his shot appeared to be going in. To have even a remote chance of making it to Wembley, they really needed both of those shots to be successful.

The focus will shift to remaining in the Premier League and expanding on a run of eight points from four games that has propelled Steve Cooper’s team to 13th in the standings despite already being eliminated from the FA Cup. They are not quite out of the woods, but they have done enough to demonstrate that they are capable of staying up. They are now only four points above the relegation positions.

On deadline day, Jonjo Shelvey, Keylor Navas, and Felipe all joined the team to help in the survival effort, and Cooper should have enough talent on hand to guarantee Premier League football for the upcoming season. Prior to a vital league match against Leeds on Sunday, Cooper saw some progress even in a losing effort versus United.

Jadon Sancho hasn’t played for United in more than three months, but he was back in the lineup against Forest after taking some time away from the team to concentrate on his mental and physical health.

Sancho, Sancho shouts welcomed him when he arrived to warm up for the first time, and they grew louder when he entered the game in the second half. Ten Hag smiled as he heard the loud cheers from Old Trafford, and he gave Sancho a tap on the head to make sure he was paying attention.
