The most effective football team in East Germany at one point was Union Berlin. The club was on the verge of bankruptcy following the collapse of the Berlin Wall in 1989 and the unification of Germany. However, the former East German team was officially admitted to the Bundesliga for the first time during the 2018–19 campaign.
Union Berlin won 1-0 in Cologne on Sunday courtesy of an own goal early in the game, moving two points ahead of league leaders Bayern Munich. A low cross from Cologne defender Timo Hubers was deflected beyond his goalkeeper at the near post in the third minute, giving Union the advantage in a frantic opening to the game.
Five minutes later, Cologne unluckily gave up a penalty after a header hit Luca Kilian with an elbow, but Jordan Pefok’s poor penalty attempt was saved by goalkeeper Marvin Schwabe to retain Union’s lead at one goal.
Union had opportunities to increase their lead, but Sheraldo Becker, the top scorer in the Bundesliga, scored a goal from a sharp angle that was called offside by video assistant referees, and Christopher Trimmel’s chipped attempt hit the crossbar.
Kilian’s afternoon took a turn for the worst when he was dismissed after receiving a second yellow card while attempting to thwart a Union counterattack. With only 10 players left, Cologne was unable to overtake the visitors, who hung on to win.
When Freiburg played Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday, they had the potential to overtake Union but ended up drawing 0-0. The next match of Union will be against Sporting Braga, where they will have the chance to maintain a strong league on the table if they manage to secure a win.
